*Are airplanes as small as they look while flying in the sky?

Hi all! My bff and I are getting on a plane for the first time and we have one basic question. Airplanes look so small when flying in the sky, how on earth can several people fit in one! I'm not sure if it is some kind of mind trick or what but please make sense of this for us!!! Whoever knew that fitting people on a presumably very tiny airplane would be so d*mn complicated.
